San Rafael is the headquarters for entertainment and technology in Marin. After George Lucas founded Lucasfilm in 1971, San Rafael became the center for high-tech elements of the entertainment business. San Rafael City Schools consist of six elementary school, one middle school, a combination elementary/middle school, two comprehensive high schools, a continuation high school, and an independent study high school.
Dixie School District consists of four schools including Dixie Elementary, Mary Silveira Elementary, Miller Creek Middle School, and Vallecito Elementary.
